THE STAR AND SENTINEL July 6, 1918
Henry Roth, a widely known resident of the county, died at 6:15 Tuesday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry E Schriver, in Butler township, from uraemic poisoning. He had been in failing health for the past three months. Mr. Roth was aged 83 years, 3 months and 27 days.
He was born in Butler township and had lived an active and useful life. From his early manhood until his retirement, four years ago, he had spent almost his entire life in the operation of flour mills in this county and at Fayetteville.
Mr. Roth was born March 5, 1835, a son of Jonas and Barbara Kauffman Roth. His first milling enterprise was in Butler township at the mill which bore his name. After conducting this for some years he sold it to Ex-Commissioner Harnish of Union township. He then farmed for several years and also owned and conducted a flour mill at Fayetteville. Then he came to Goldenville where he built the house now owned by John Van Dyke. The latter part of his business life was spent at Centre Mills where he conducted the mill which he later sold to T. S. Rhodes, now known as Rouzer's Mill.
Mr. Roth was actively interested in affairs in his township. He served for a number of years as a school director, and was also tax collector for a time. During his entire life he was much interested in religious work, and had been superintendent of a number of Sunday Schools. He was a member of the Lutheran a church at Biglerville.
Mrs. Roth died four years ago and leaves three sons and two daughters; Samuel S Roth, of Butler, Pa.; Gilmore G. Roth, of South Orange, N.J.; Prof. H Milton Roth, of Gettysburg; Mrs. Harry E Clare, of Wilkinsburg; and Mrs. Harry E Schriver, with whom he resided.
He also leaves two brother, Reuben D Roth of Mummasburg; and Dr. Leander Roth, of Spring Grove.
The funeral was held on Friday morning at 9:30. The services were conducted at the house by
