WEALTHY MAN
ENDS OWN LIFE,
USING STRAP
WOODSTOCK. April 26; Sylvanus Mumaw, wealthy Shenandoah county farmer, who was convicted at the March term of circuit court of a violation of the prohibition laws, committed suicide by hanging. at his home, near Columbia Furnace. Thursday afternoon.
The self-destruction was accomplished by using a snap which he had attached to the ceiling over his bed, which had been placed there some time ago in order that he might use it as an aid in moving himself, he being a sufferer fromrheumatism.
In Town Few Hours Before
Mumaw was in Conicville just a few hours before committing suicide to procure medicine from Dr. J. H. Moomaw, for a member of the family, and his actions did not indicate his intention to kill himself.
Upon his return home he sat around the house until his, daughter had gene out to look after the cows. When she left he sat on the edge of the bed, adjusted the strap around his neck and threw himself to the floor, where he slowly choked to death. When found al about six o'clock, he was cut dawn and medical aid summoned.
Despondent Over Conviction
Since his conviction for having a still and a quantity of ardent spirits on his premises. Mumaw had been despondent and frequently said that he would kill himself, rather than go to jail. His sentence of thirty days and $100 fine was suspended, pending an appeal to the supreme court, and the record in the appeal was being made up at the time of his death,
Mumaw was worth approximately $65,000, the wealthiest man ever convicted of crime in Shenandoah county, and during his trial he protested his innocence, of ignorance of how the liquor got on his premises. He claimed that the still found was in his possession since 1904. and was not in a condition to be used.
McManaway Raided His Place
A striking colncidence of the tragedy was the killing of Prohibition agent McManaway at Flynn, in Bath county, during a liquor raid. McManaway was one of the officers raiding the Mumaw farm and was oaf of the prosecuting witnesses at the trial of the aged suicide. His death at the hands of bootleggers was at about the same hour in the same day that Mumaw was dying by his own hand at Columbia Furnace.
Mumaw is survived by two sons and three daughters.
