About 1815, John & Mary Mumma joined her family, the Foxes, plus some other neighbors and migrated to Belmont Co., OH. It was here that they raised their family. In 1817, John was accidentally killed by a tree falling on him. He is buried in the Salem Church Yard Cemetery, Sewellsville, OH.
After his death, his wife, Mary, sold the 320 acre farm near St. Clairsville.
There is an interesting family jingle that was created to remember the names of the children. It goes like this.
Joe, Jack and Mary Ann,
Hen, Dan and Roseann
One of John's sons, Henry Mumma, migrated to Dayton Ohio around 1860 and worked for his uncle, George Ruben Mumma, who was a successful market farmer.
The oldest daughter migrated to Newcomerstown, Ohio, while John Jr. moved to Tuscarawas Co., Ohio and the Rock River region near Moline Illinois. Some even moved on to Friend, Nebraska.
1810 Maryland Census, Washington County, Sharpsburg 100 enumeration dist. pages 504 & 506
There were only 56 households enumerated in this district. Jacob Muma [210] heads this enumeration list. He is the brother of Henry Mumma. Then 43 entries later, his nephew, John Muma [2181] appears followed 4 entries later by John's brother, brother Henry Muma [2184], next to his mother, Juliana Muma [wife of 218] and next to her is her daughter and husband, Peter & Barbara Muma [2186] Warble. The following description of the burial place of John Mumm is from a 1960 letter written by Edna P. Mumma to Frank A. Ward.
"Coming west from Morristown, Belmont Co., Ohio to the John Isaal corner a short distance west from Lady's bend on Nation Road - turn to the right at John Isaal corner and go about a half mile (I am guessing at this distance) to a farm where there is a small cemetery. It is called - or was - the Goodwin Farm. It is the 320 A that Mary Fox Mumm sold to her brother John Fox (after the death of her husband, John Mumma) for $300.01. $300 for the 160 acres where the log buildings were and $.01 for the 160 acres without buildings."
