Katharine Elizabeth Short Muma
Katharine Elizabeth Short Muma passed away peacefully at her home at 26 High-Lonesome Road in Silver City, N.M. on April 11, 2005, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Muma was born May 13, 1919, in Trenton, N.J., to Oliver Clark Short and Katharine Mae Alton Short. She graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1940 and married Martin Hammond Muma on September 14, 1940. They have six children: Bonnie Louise Parsons, of Santa Clara, N.M.; Leslie Martin Muma and his wife Pam of Clearwater, Fla.; Merrie Lynn Thompson and her husband Glenn of Washougal, Wash.; Sallie Anne Van Curen of Los Lunas, N.M.; Cherie Kay Salmon and her husband M.H. "Dutch" of Silver City; and Elsie Virginia Thompson and her husband Steve of Paris, France. Ten grandchildren: Lisa Muma Weitz, William Thompson, Merrie Kay Thompson Alzola, Serena Brown Weh, Celia Dawn Brown, Theodore Van Curen, III, Kelli Van Curen, John "Bud" Salmon, Ebony Tufares Leary and Aspen Tufares. And eleven great-grandchildren; Jessica Weitz, Jonathan Weitz, Martin Thompson, Eric Weh, Abigail Weh, Morgan Brown, Austin Brown, Christopher Beasley, Anthony Beasley, Sunshine Van Curen and Aiden Leary.
Mrs. Muma and her husband lived in College Park, Md., Lincoln, Neb., and Winter Haven, Fla. before Dr. Muma, a professional entomologist, retired in Silver City, N.M. in 1971. Mrs. Muma was a lifelong school teacher and continued her teaching career in Silver City, earning her Masters in Counseling from WNMU and working as a roving school counselor for the Silver School District in the 1070s. She and her husband bought and operated the Lake Roberts General Store for several years in the late 1970s before retiring to Portal, Arizona in 1980. While in Portal, Mrs. Muma served on the San Simon School Board, volunteered at the Portal Library and was active in the Sew-What Community Service Club. They lived there until 1989 when Dr. Muma passed away. Mrs. Muma moved back to Silver City in 1991. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, a volunteer at the Silver City Museum and the Friends of the Silver City Library. She enjoyed meetings and bridge games with the Newcomer's Club, and especially treasured her time with her grandson Bud. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her many friends. A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 615 N. Texas St. in Silver City on Thursday, April 14, 2005, at 10 a.m., with Father Robert Ihlefeld and Father Gene Hutchins officiating. A private internment next to her husband of 49 years will follow at the Paradise Cemetery in Paradise, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, P.O. Box 2795, Silver City, NM, 88062.
