Mrs. Anna E. Mumma, the mother of this family, is the only surviving member of her father's family, by whose death she inherited property. He owned four large farms, three of which are in Lower Swatara township, this county, and one near Hummelstown, in all amounting to 469 acres. Her father bore a conspicuous part in the development of his county.
Michael Ulrich, the grandfather of Mrs. Mumma had several farms in Lower Swatara township, on which he resided at different times, but at the time of his death he was a resident of Middletown. First, he was a member of Old St. Peter's Lutheran church of that place, and contributed largely towards its support, but in his latter days, be joined the United Brethren church. In politics he was an old line Whig. He died in 1845, aged about 68; his remains, with that of his wife, were buried in the Lutheran cemetery in Middletown. He was twice married: First to Catherine Stover, and second to Mary Decker, by whom he had no issue. The children by his first marriage where: 1, Samuel, married Mary Allman. 2, May, married Christian Eshenauer. 3, Catherine, married Philip Albert. 4, Adam married Mary Decker. 5, Michael, (father of Mrs. Mumma). 6, Elizabeth, married Jacob Eshener. 7, John, married Catherine Hepick. 8, and 9, Nancy and Daniel, twins, died young.
(ed. - The Kreider family was descended from Jacob Kreider, a Swiss emigrant who came to America with his family prior to 1717. The early members of this family are buried in the cemetery at the Kreider Mennonite church on Snitz Creek (the "Kreider Kirche Hoff naber der Schnitz Creek"), southwest of the city of Lebanon, Lebanon county (then Lancaster county), Pa. Their genealogy is given by Egle (Notes and Queries, Annual Volume 1900, p. 53-55). Catherine Kreider Mumma was the sixth of nine children of Jacob Kreider (b. Aug. 17, 1771 - d. Feb. 12, 1853, son of Jacob, of John, of Martin, of Jacob the immigrant). He resided all his life in the Schnitz Creek settlement. Egle states: "...vi. Catherine, m. Isaac Mumma, long a resident of Londonderry township." This corroborates information about the parents of Josiah J. Mumma given in his biography.)

Michael Ulrich, father of Mrs. Mumma, was born near Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, November 18, 1811, died April 5, 1889. He was a farmer, and owned several of the best farms in Dauphin county. He took much interest in agriculture. He was a member of the Lutheran church, in which he held the office of deacon. He was a Republican and was the assessor of his township. He married, January 22, 1836, Catherine Heicher, born in Lower Swatara township, Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, August 31, 1813, died December 18, 1883. She was a very devout Christian woman, a member of the Lutheran church. Their children were: 1, John, died in infancy. 2, Anna E., born March 20, 1839, wife of J. J. Mumma of this sketch. 3, Henry A., born August 15, 1842, died in infancy.
