KEARNEY - Charles E. Mumma, 74, of Kearney died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Sheri Lodel will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at the Nelson Cemetery in Nelson.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
O'Brien - Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Mumma
KEARNEY - Charles E. Mumma, 74, of Kearney died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Mr. Mumma was born June 10, 1935, on the family farm near Nelson to Ralph and Esther (Althouse) Mumma.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Jeanette of Kearney; a daughter and son-in-law, Nita and Kim Deyo of Kearney; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Merle Mumma of Luranger, La., and Ray and Kathryn Mumma of Camarillo, Calif.
Additional survivors include grandsons, Keith Deyo of Elm Creek and Jarad Deyo of Kearney; granddaughter-in-law, Wendy Deyo of Kearney; great-granddaughters, Haley and McKenzie Deyo of Elm Creek; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gayle Johnson and wife, Gwen, of Davenport, Russ Genung and wife, Donna, of Deshler and Gene Genung and wife, Donnis, of Superior; and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
He attended a rural Nuckolls County school and Nelson Public School, graduating in 1953. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1960 with an agriculture Bachelor of Science degree. He belonged to Alpha Zeta honor society, and Ag Men fraternity. He did graduate work at UNL and in Fort Hayes, Kan. On June 29, 1958, he married Jeanette Genung in Nelson. He served in the US Army from 1955-1957. He served in Germany as a radar specialist and was discharged from the Army on Dec. 31, 1963, after serving another six years in the inactive reserves.
He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, located in Loup City, Seward, Alma and Holdrege, Trenton, Mo., Springfield, Mo., Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Bismarck, N.D. He retired on Dec. 1, 1990, after 35 years of government service. After retirement, they moved to Grand Island and established Chuck's Country Market (vegetable farm). For health reasons, they sold the farm and moved to Kearney in 2006.
He was active in 4H and FFA as a youth. He was active in many civic and professional organizations, including Jaycees in Seward and Alma, Toastmasters, Elks Lodges in Trenton, Mo., Bismarck, N.D., and Grand Island, Soil and Water Conservation Society of America, Organization of Professional Employees of the Dept. of Agriculture, Optimist Club, UNL alumni association, American Legion post 53, VFW Post 1345, Eagles lodge 378 in Grand Island and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He served on many church councils, sang in church choirs and helped coordinate the reconstruction of Calvary Lutheran Church in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Evelyn Snyder and her husband, Ray; and sister-in-law, Lila Mumma.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the local American Cancer Society.
