Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) Patriot, Friday, December 2, 1904:
SUDDEN DEATH OF T. F. MUMMA
President of Letter Carriers' Union Succumbed At Breakfast Table
Sitting in a chair at the breakfast table with his head resting upon his arm, Thomas F. Mumma, for fourteen years a United States mail carrier and president of the Harrisburg Letter Carriers' Union, was found dead at his home, 909 North Second street, yesterday morning at 7 o'clock.
Mrs. Mumma arose about 5 o'clock and awakened her husband, who said that she need not prepare him any breakfast, as he was not hungry. Frequently he had only taken a cup of coffee before going out and ate his breakfast later after the delivery of his early morning mail.
About 7 o'clock one of the women lodgers of the house went into the kitchen for some hot water, and after speaking to him received no reply. She immediately notified Mrs. Mumma. Dr. John A. Fritchey was called in, but said that Mr. Mumma had been dead for some time.
Mr. Mumma pursued his duties up until the time of his death and on Wednesday evening transacted some special business. The members of the family never heard him complain, but it is said he spoke to several mail carriers recently about a pain near his heart.
Mr. Mumma was fifty-three years old and had been an employee in the postoffice department in the capacity of mail carrier since June 1, 1892. During that time he had earned the reputation of being diligent in the pursuit of his work. Besides being president of the local Letter Carriers' Union, he was also a member of the Clecks Beneficial Society.
He is survived by a wife and daughter, Ethel; a brother, Edward C., of this city, and a sister, Mrs. M. E. Youlin (sic), of Chicago. The funeral services will be held on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock and will be in charge of the Rev. Dr. J. Wesley Hill, pastor of the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. Interment will be private.
