Weed, Calif. -- Elizabeth Deetz Muma - Mar 20, 2013
------------------
Elizabeth Ellen Deetz was born in the family home in Weed on September 26, 1920. She was the second of three children born to George and Clara (Dennis) Deetz. The eldest brother was Lewis, and the youngest was Alva. During their early years, their father worked as a track walker at Deetz Station. Their mother went to work in the box factory in Weed to help support the family, and the duties of maintaining the home fell upon Elizabeth. She took care of the cleaning and cooking, and the care of her father and brothers.
Elizabeth attended the Weed schools, and as a junior in high school began dating a young man from McCloud named George Muma. They were married on August 24,1940 in a simple church ceremony in Reno. George worked for the McCloud Railroad and they made their home in McCloud . The Lord blessed them with two children, Edie born in 1942, and David born in 1943. George served in the army during World War II and when he returned the Lord blessed them with another daughter, Sybil, born in 1947.
In 1965, realizing their dream, George and Liz moved to the home they built together on Squaw Valley Road. Through the years, kids of many ages have enjoyed the fishing on the creek behind the house. Liz and George had a revolving door of family and friends, especially, grand children. After George retired, they bought an RV and enjoyed traveling with friends to Yellowstone and the Oregon and California coast. In the mid-90?s, all three children returned to McCloud to live near their parents and support them. Liz continued living in their home following George?s passing in 1999. Edie, David and Sybil have fond memories of their childhood and of their mom as a wonderful homemaker. Sewing, embroidery, cooking, baking, and canning were among the many things that Liz did that helped create such a comfortable home for her family. Their friends liked to come to their house as Liz would have a fresh baked loaf of bread and didn?t mind if they cut into it as it came hot out of the oven. The kids also liked to come there because it was an easy home and they could play without a lot of strict rules.
Liz loved her home and having her children close by. Reading novels, working crossword puzzles, and reading the paper to keep on top of current events were some of her pastimes; and she was always ready to play those games of pinochle, scrabble and dominoes. She was a quiet and unassuming woman who was very proud of her family. She was also very proud of her heritage and would light up whenever she had the chance to talk about her Deetz family history in Siskiyou county. She continually amazed her family with her capacity to remember names and places.
In addition to her membership at McCloud Community Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary of McCloud, Liz in earlier years taught Sunday School classes at the McCloud Presbyterian Church, assisted with the girl scouts, and along with George, was a member of the Squaw Valley Riding Club.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Edie (Tom) Adams of McCloud; son, David Muma of McCloud; and daughter, Sybil Stewart of McCloud; nine grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband George, and her two brothers.
Liz was much loved and will be missed by those who knew her and those whose lives she touched. A celebration of life was held on February, 23, 2013, at the Mt. Shasta Memorial Park Chapel. Pastor Ray Horst officiated. Interment will be at a later dateat the Mt. Shasta Memorial Park , along side her husband George. Memorial contributions may be made to the McCloud Community Presbyterian Church, PO Box610, McCloud, CA 96057.
