MUMMA
On Monday evening at 10:30 o'clock the soul of Elizabeth S. Mumma, daughter of Dr. G. F. Mumma of Whitewater, was released from its suffering tenement for the freerer life in the presence of the King.
Miss Mumma was born in Cartor (sic Canton), Mo., November 14 1883. When she was a child of one year her parents removed to Williamstown and two years later to Kirksville in the same state. About three years ago the family came here to make their home, where they now live. Some months ago Miss Mumma, after careful thought and a frank conversation with her pastor, G. Trever, united with the M. E. Church on probation, coming to the alter alone with womanly strength and purpose. But she did not live to become a member in full connection, for not long after she gave her name, sickness laid its heavy hand upon her and she was unable to attend church services at all. From last November, when her disease first began to look serious she sunk toward the grave. With occasional rallies, she was, however, unable to gain the mastery of the dread, subtile malady, consumption, which at last, in spite of the best care, fastened its unyielding grasp upon her. On last Sunday, it became evident to all her friends that the end was near. Yet she was hopeful. On Monday morning she seemed stronger, but it was like a last flash of a flickering light before the spark was quenched. On Monday her sister broke the news that she must leave them. Instinctively clinging to life with the eagerness of youth, she yet faced death without a fear.
She was conscious to last, left her last messages, said her farewells, looked into the face of death with courage and faith in Jesus, and departed to be with the King.
Besides her parents, she leaves a sister and two brothers to look forward and upward to the land whither she has ascended. The funeral services were hold (sic) on the home on North Prairie street, Wednesday, May 27, at three o'clock in the presence of a large company of sympathizing friends and kindred, the Rev. G. H. Trever officiating, burial at Hillside cemetery.
