Kerby Butler Mumma of 13215 Hillandale Road in Hagerstown died suddenly on May 16 on the golf course at Fountain Head Country Club. She had completed the fourth hole when she suffered a massive coronary.
Kerby was the middle daughter of the late Leo William and Louise Maria Butler. She is survived by her only daughter Christine Burkhardt of Washington, D.C.; sister, Janet Watts and her husband, George of Boulder, Colo.; stepson, Will Mumma and his wife Pam of Hagerstown; and Buster, the Wheaton Terrier, also of Hagerstown. She was preceded in death by her second husband, William Franklin Mumma Sr., in January of 2003; her brother, Bill Butler; and stepdaughter, Alice Matson.
Kerby grew up in Fort Lupton, Colo., and graduated from Colorado State University, where she was president of the Pan Hellenic Society and a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She married the late William Burkhardt in Colorado and they moved with DuPont to Wilmington, Del., where they resided until their move to Hagerstown in 1969.
Kerby was an occupational therapist at Western Maryland Hospital Center and served on the Western Maryland Hospital Center Endowment Board. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she served on the board of St. John's Shelter for the Homeless. She was a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood serving in several offices, including president. She was actively planning its State Convention for 2006. An avid gardener, Kerby was a long-standing member of the Antietam Garden Club and a member of Fountain Head Country Club.
Kerby studied calligraphy at the Smithsonian and eventually became a master calligrapher, with a special interest in Carolingian lettering. Her artistic endeavors included miniature folding books and handcrafted envelopes. Kerby was an avid collector and had a world-class handkerchief collection. She also amassed a distinguished collection of Halcyon boxes, Herend Rabbits, and whimsical thoughts which were sprinkled liberally around her home.
There will be no visitation. Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Friday, May 20, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Scott P. Bellows officiating.
