Elizabeth Jean "Betty" Mumaw (1930-2012)
Elizabeth Jean "Betty" Mumaw, 81, of Strasburg, Virginia, peacefully departed her earthly life on New Years afternoon at Consulate Health of Woodstock.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at the Strasburg Christian Church, Strasburg, VA. Burial service will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, VA. Per Betty's last wishes, there will be no visitation night.
Betty was born on June 4, 1930 at Del Ray Farm, Strasburg. She was the youngest of ten children of the late Edward Emory and Annie Adelia Richard Artz. Betty had many enjoyable stories of her youth with her cherished siblings. Betty graduated from the first "New Strasburg High School" in 1951. There were exactly 51 members who garnered diplomas that year! Betty was a lifelong member of Strasburg Christian Church where, in her youth, she sang soprano in choir. She also belonged to the CWC. On June 29, 1952, she married William McCune "Bill" Mumaw at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Strasburg. They were married for 29 years until his untimely death on December 14, 1980. Betty worked as a waitress for Murphy's Restaurant and the Old Mill Restaurant in her early years. She was a stay-at-home mom until her children entered school. She returned to the work force and, for a short time, worked at Crestliner Boat Factory. She eventually made her employment with Aileen, Inc., Aileen Avenue, Strasburg. She retired from Aileen on August 1, 1980 after 20 years of service as a garment inspector. After her husband passed, she became a baby sitter for 10 years to local children in her community. During these years she also devoted her free time to two local organizations, The Strasburg American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #77, and The Women of the Moose, Lodge 403. She was extremely active in their fund raisers and put her wonderful cooking talent to good use. She was so proud to be given a Lifetime Membership of Unit 77's Auxiliary. Her husband had been a disabled Korean Veteran and she believed in the Legion's mission purpose. During her later years she loved to read, work word puzzles, watch TV game shows and play bingo. She had three devoted, loving friends who took her to bingo every Monday, went out for lunches and drives to various locations these past years. She so enjoyed the friendships of her Bingo Bunch at McDonalds in Strasburg and to Mollie Lee, also her niece, Petzi and Julia, she loved each of you. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She so cherished her large, loving family and was grateful for the longevity she had been given by the Lord.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her only son, William Edward "Bill" Mumaw on October 19, 2003; brothers, Maynard E. Artz and Benjamin E. Artz; and following sisters, Annabel Chandler, Mary Louise White, Dorothy C. Ruffner, Ruth Artz Edmondson and Adelia "Dickie" Artz.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Janie Shillingburg and husband, Teddy L. Sr. of Toms Brook, VA; her loving daughter in law, Melissa A. Mumaw of Strasburg, her beloved grandson, Christopher Staten Mumaw, a freshman at Roanoke College, Roanoke; brothers, Robert L. Artz and Samuel F. Artz, Sr., both of Strasburg; and at least four generations of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two sisters in law; Mary H. Artz and Juanita W. Artz, both of Strasburg as well as four step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be nephews; John Ruffner, John Michael Pappas, Gary M. Stinson, Terry Allen Stinson, and Church friends Allen Strosnider and Duncan Currie.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Strasburg Christian Church, P.O. Box 581, Strasburg, VA 22657, American Cancer Society , 2654 Valley Ave, Suite B, Winchester, VA 22601 or Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Suite 405, Winchester, VA 22601.
One last thought, Betty was a thoughtful, humble and modest woman who cherished the Lord, her family and her friends. She was ready when God called her to eternal rest. She had a good life full of countless blessings.
