DESCENDANT OF OLD FAMILY IN COUNTY PASSES AWAY
Mrs. Sara Mumma Charles, 75, a member of one of Central Pennsylvania's oldest families, died Tuesday et the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edgar M. Dapp, 2414 Jefferson Street.
Mrs. Charles, widow of John D. Charles was a descendent of Jacob Mumma, Revolutionary War soldier, who settled on e large land grant south of Harrisburg over 200 years ago. Her great-grandfather established one of the first Conestoga wagon lines between Philadelphia and Fort Pitt, now Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Charles' family contributed the land now forming Shoop's Church Cemetery and Mumma Cemetery, now called East-Harrisburg, helped establish both the Farmers' Market Company and the Chestnut Street Market end the old Star-Independent newspaper.
Mrs. Charles was a niece of the late Judge David Mumma, major on the military staff of Governor Curtin during the Civil War and she was also a relative of the late Judge Isaac Mumma.
Mrs. Charles is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Edith Mae Dapp of Harrisburg, and Mrs. Cora B. Solomon of Philadelphia; sons, Arthur H., Ross I., of this city and John M. Charles, of Gardiner, Montana; eight grandchildren, four great-grand children and a brother, Jones M. Rudy, of Dauphin.
Funeral services will be held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edgar M. Depp, 2414 Jefferson Street, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. with burial in Shoop's Church Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening.
