In 1850 census it is noted that of all Jacob's children only James attended school within the past year. In his father's estate inventory it is noted that James went in on a business transaction on 4 Oct 1874 with George R. Sipes.
There appears to be two entries in the 1860 census for James A. Mumma. He and all Mummas in this census of Fulton County were listed under the surname spelling of "Mumaugh". The census entries are:
--------------------------------
1860 census PA, Fulton Co., Taylor Twp., page 179, 13 June 1870
James Mumaugh, 25, Farmer, $800 real estate, $110 personal, b. PA
Eliza A Mumaugh, 20, b. PA
Barbara E. " , 1, b. PA
1860 census PA, Fulton Co., Licking Creek Twp., page 142, 2 August 1870
[This James is living 2 doors away from Jacob & Sarah Mumaugh, who are known to be the parents of a James A. Mumma]
James Mumaugh, 23, Farmer, $50 personal, b. PA
Sarah Mumaugh, 19, b. PA
Barbrah " , 1, b. PA
[The following is the personal belief of Doug Mumma - doug@mummal.org]
"The same census taker enumerated both households, but a month and a half apart in time and some distance apart.
The census enumeration day was 1 June, 1860, meaning a person was to report the status of the household as of that date and not as of the reporting date. I suggest that James, Sarah and Barbara moved from the vincinity of his parents farm about the 1st of June and purchased a farm in Taylor Township. He was probably renting space from his father. As a result of his move, he was enumerated in Taylor Township on 13 June and the information about the family is quite accurate. Then on 2 August, the census enumerator reaches James' father's house. Since James had moved about 1 1/2 months earlier, the person responding may have been unsure of the exact date James A. Mumma moved, and he was reported as living in the area on that date. For whatever reason, James' wife was listed as Sarah (James' mother's name) instead of Eliza. "
I have looked in the 1870 and 1880 censuses using all different name variations trying to find this little family without success.
At this point assume Doug's assumption. March 2004
