Dr. OTIS J. MUMAW
Dr. Otis Jesse Mumaw, 89, of Kansas City north, passed away February 3, 2000, at Alpine North Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 5, at the Platte Woods United Methodist Church, 7310 N.W. Prairie View Rd.; burial in Green Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until service time Saturday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the church memorial fund or to the Alzheimer's Association.
Dr. Mumaw was born July 23, 1910, in Onaga, KS. He graduated from Onaga High School, received his BS degree from Washburn University, his Masters degree from the University of Kansas, and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Chicago. He taught music in Lyndon, KS, and at Parsons Junior College, and was the director of the music department at Pittsburg (KS) State Teachers College. Later he taught music in several Kansas City, Missouri schools and retired his career in education as vice principal at Lincoln High School in Kansas City. He then became a District Manager for Schulmerich Handbells Company. He taught, sold, repaired, and played handbells throughout the Kansas City area. Dr. Mumaw was a member of the Platte Woods United Methodist Church where he served as Choir Director and Handbell Choir Director. He was past dean of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He was Past Chairman of Area VIII Handbells. He was nationally known as a Handbell Clinician and Solo Ringer. He was a 55 year (life) member of Raytown Kiwanas and a member of the Pittsburg (KS) Masonic Lodge. He was very active in scouting as a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, and singing the National Anthem as well as "On My Honor" at Eagle Scout Courts of Honor. He also helped organize and direct music for Boy Scout Roundups. He also served as director for the American Legion Band for many years. He leaves his wife, Mary Lucile, of the home; two stepsons and their wives, Bob and Jane Haddock and Ken and Barbara Haddock; a niece, Freda Donovan, and her husband, Maurice; a nephew, Lyle Mumaw, and his wife Treva; five grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; six great-nieces and nephews; and 17 great-great-nieces and nephews.
