GEORGE WASHINGTON HUMMEL, seventh child and fourth son of Frederick and Susanna (Hamaher) Hummel, was born in Hummelstown, June, 1819, and died December 12, 1899. He spent his early years on the farm, and received his education in the common schools of that town. At the early age of twelve years his ambition led him to set out in life for himself, and he walker the entire distance to Harrisburg, where he procured employment as an errand boy in the grocery store of Judge Doch, with whom he remained several years, his ability and fidelity being rewarded with advancement to a clerkship. After some years service in that capacity, he engaged in the grocery business. He was subsequently associated with John Killinger, until the time of the civil war, and later again conducted business alone and with a larger degree of success, and until he decided to retire from active pursuits, committing the business to his son. He was respected for his ability and high personal character. He died at the advanced age of eighty-one years. He married Margaret Isabel Kissecker, died June 9, 1873, daughter of Jonathan and ______ (Keitzer) Kissecker, and their children were: 1. Rose K, born October 24, 1851, died June 23, 1871; married D. Mimma, of Harrisburg. 2. Margaret W., born, April 24, 1854, married W. H. Eby. 3. John Killinger. 4. Edward W., born December 11, 1858, lives retired at 21 South Fourth street, Harrisburg. 5. Horace L., born November 6, 1860. 6. Gillman F., born, March 17, 1862, died December 17, 1865. 7. Lyllie K., born April 24, 1866, died January 31, 1868.
