-------------------------------
Robert Samuel Duphorne entered the local school as a lad. At the time of the Civil War, he tried to enlist, but was not accepted on account of his age. His older brother had enlisted; that was another reason for his staying at home - to help provide for the family. With much regret he stood by the home gate, and watched his brother, friends, and neighbors march away.
During this time he finished apprenticeships as a shoemaker, with a man in Emmitsburg, and shortly after the close of the war, settled in Sabillasville, Md. Here he established the only boot and shoe shop in the vicinity. He was a fine workman, receiving as much as fifteen and twenty dollars per pair for the footwear he made. He was postmaster at Sabillasville during the Garfield and Arthur presidential terms.
In 1886, he moved with his wife and six sons to Iowa where they remained for one year. From there the family moved to Harper, Kansas, and settled on a farm for a few years. It was during this time that the "E" was added to the family name. No one seems to know why. After moving into Harper, he was janitor of a school building for several years. The children loved him very dearly and he did many kindnesses for them.
He lived in the same house in Harper until his death.
