Samuel George Spangler, 88 Winchester, born August 16, 1921, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, died January 31, 2010 at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury in Winchester, Virginia.
Mr. Spangler was the son of the late Mr. Howard A. and Mrs. Marguerite Tipton Spangler, of Gettysburg and Harrisonburg, Virginia.
He was graduated from Mount Clinton High School in Harrisonburg and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1942.
He served in France and Germany in World War II, rising to the rank of Major in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Cluster and the Combat Infantryman Award. Mr. Spangler was a Battalion Adjutant and Commanding Officer of a Headquarters Company in the 63rd Infantry Division.
Following the war, Mr. Spangler was a farmer and cattleman. He served as Executive Director of the Virginia Angus Association. He was also a developer in industrial and commercial real estate in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area.
Mr. Spangler was a longtime member and Elder in the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church and later the Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte (Peggy) Rhodes Spangler, five children, Carolyn Lewis, Winchester, Samuel Spangler III, Scottsville, Virginia, Margaret Sue Jamison, of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, Janie Craig, of Tucson, Arizona, and Barbara Spangler, of Arlington, Virginia, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and a brother, John F. Spangler, of Harrisonburg.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, H. Eugene Spangler of Harrisonburg, and Richard E. Spangler, of Spokane, Washington.
A graveside service will take place at 3p.m. Tuesday, February, 2nd, at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg and a memorial service will be held at 2p.m. Tuesday February 9th, at the Westminster-Canterbury Chapel in Winchester.
