Prosecutor: No charges against police in Garrett shooting
The Journal Gazette
No charges will be brought against the officers involved in a police-action shooting April 10 in Garrett, the DeKalb County prosecutor said today.
Both DeKalb sheriff's deputy Todd McCormick and Garrett officer Alicia Castro acted to defend themselves against Joshua D. Mumma, 41, of Garrett, Prosecutor ClaraMary Winebrenner said in a statement.
"Therefore, the State of Indiana has no case against Deputy McCormick nor Officer Castro for their actions in this incident," the statement said.
Mumma is considered a person of interest in the incident, which remains under investigation, Winebrenner said.
Indiana State Police have said both officers were involved in a traffic stop because of an equipment violation about 8:20 p.m. in the 400 block of Hamsher Street.
During the traffic stop, gunfire was exchanged and Mumma was hospitalized in critical condition, state police said. Winebrenner said Mumma is currently recovering from his injuries.
