Wilmer went to school in California and was there when the 1906 earthquake occurred. From his namesake nephew, Wilmer Mckendrick Mumma, we learn that Wilmer became a lawyer and changed the spelling of his surname to MUMA, just like his 3rd cousin, Irwin Johnston Muma. Apparently they were classmates at the University of California at Berkeley. He is listed in the 1900 census of San Francisco, California living in a rooming house at 793 Pine Street. Wilmer's name was spelling is listed as MUMMA in that census. Wilmer became an attorney, but changed his profession to education. He taught in many schools in California until he retired. He returned to Sharpsburg, MD in 1939
