Jay Powell Mumma left us on Monday, May 16, 2011 after a short illness. Jay was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 6, 1944. His family moved to Austin, Texas when he was four years old. Later he attended the University of Texas at Austin, and completed his degree in anthropology at the University of California, Davis. Jay served in the Marine Corps from 1965-1967, after which he obtained a Masters in Library Science from the University of Oklahoma. After working in Texas for a couple of years Jay went back to school at Davis where he met the love of his life, Ariel, with whom he spent over 37 wonderful years. They were married on August 19, 1973. For the past 29 years Jay was a familiar face at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah. He was known for his dedication to the library and its mission, his willingness to help anyone who needed him, his big smile, and his ability to make a pun out of anything. Some of them were truly awful. Jay was at every program and event offered by the Library and always was supportive of all Library faculty and staff in any of their endeavors. His support for his community was also evident, and Jay often volunteered to help with marathons, bicycle races, the Paralympics, races at Miller Motorsports Park and other local events. Besides his wife Ariel, Jay's greatest passion was motorcycles and motorcycle racing, and for years he was a regular at the motorcycle races held at Laguna Seca, California. Jay was a friend to all, met everything with a wonderful smile, and enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed but will always live in the hearts of his many friends. Jay is survived by his wife Ariel, and his brothers David and Ben. In lieu of flowers, his family would like to suggest that a donation be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. The funeral will be held at Congregation Kol Ami (2425 East 2760 South, [Heritage Ave.] Salt Lake City, Utah 84109; 801-484-1501) on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at 2:00 pm., to be followed by a light reception at the synagogue.
