"Linn County Pioneer Died Saturday Aug. 5
Abraham D. Hays had Been Ill Five Months; Funeral Services at His Home
Abraham D. Hays, 82-year-old pioneer of Linn county and a resident of Valley township since he was two years old, died Saturday afternoon at 3:45 o'clock following a five-month illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Susie Hamilton.
Born near Circleville, Pickaway Coumty, Ohio on April 30, 1862, he was the son of Charles Wesley and Terrissee Hays. At the age of two, he came to Kansas with his parents and settled in Valley township, where he has lived his entire life.
On September 16, 1884 he was united in marriage to Addie Rowe who preceded him in death on January 11, 1928. To this union two daughters were born, Anna Hamilton and Susie Hamilton, who survive to mourn his loss.
Five months ago, when his health failed, Mr. Hays made his home with his two daughters, and during his illness he was a patient sufferer, always grateful for kindnesses shown him.
Others who survive besides his two daughters are a brother, C. B. Hays, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two grandsons, Rees Hamilton of Boicourt and David Hamilton with the armed forces in England; one great grand daughter, Anna Lee Hamilton, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at his home in Valley township at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. R. H. Wallace and Rev. D. M. Crawford. Music was furnished by Zola Hamilton and Orla Hays who sang, "Nearer My God To Thee," "Good Night and Good Morning," and "Going Down The Valley," accompanied by Alice Taylor with organ music.
Pallbearers were Charles Hanks, Lawrence Martin, Ernest Evey, Billie Rowe McChesney, Lee Smith, Terry Hays, Blaine Gibson, and Dolphus Davis. Burial was in the Richland cemetery.
Those from a distance attending the funeral were Charlie Hays, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; Mrs. David Hamilton, Hume; Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hanks and daughter Virginia; Mrs. Alta Spriggs and Lawrence Martin, Columbus, Kas.; Mrs. Annie Read, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Evey, Mrs. Grace Cates, Mrs. Olive Gage, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Alfred Wilgus, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Calvin, La Cygne; Mr. and Mrs. George Wilcox, Blue Mound; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hightower, Mound City; Mr. and Mrs. Will Priestly and two daughters, Miss Violet Priestly and Mrs. Ferne Van Kirk of Louisburg; Mr. and Mrs. James Martin and Mrs. Roscoe Staton, Pleasanton, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Read and son Wilford; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Read and son of Amsterdam."
