Catherine Funkhouser Fansler, 94, of Basye, died Monday, April 13, 2015 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Virginia.
The Rev. David Drebes will conduct the funeral Thursday at 11 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Orkney Springs. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Fansler was born March 27, 1921 in Craney Island, Rockingham County, daughter of the late Thomas Casper Funkhouser and Hamie Moomaw Funkhouser.
She was a graduate of New Market High School, Class of 1938, and she took post-graduate business courses in Broadway. She worked at Linhoss Pharmacy in New Market and was a study hall teacher at Central High School for many years.
She was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and WELCA, and she was a member and past Worthy Matron of Mt. Jackson Chapter 162, Mt. Jackson Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Ann Stieler and husband, Thomas, of Powhattan; a son, Jack O'Neal Fansler and wife, Margaret, of Mt. Jackson; one sister, Pat Vaughan and husband, Bill, of Woodstock; five grandchildren, Justin Stieler and wife, Valerie, of Falls Church, Allison Fansler and husband, Dan Israel, of Washington D.C, Emily Stieler of Atlanta, Natalie Fansler Hintenach and husband, Eric, of Moneta, and Amy Fansler of Charlottesville; five great grandchildren, Elise Israel, Lucas Israel, Luci Hintenach, Hylah Israel, and Tyler Hintenach; a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece and caregiver, Debbie Helsley; and a friend, LaVerne Peechatka.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Nelson E. Fansler; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Fansler; and two sisters, Virginia F. Fansler and Cleta L. Funkhouser.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting afghans, hats, sweaters, stockings, etc., attending church activities cooking huge family dinners, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Charles A. Fravel, Tommy Fravel, Ron Moomaw, Allen Moomaw, C.W. Fansler, Gary Coffman, Tom Fansler, Randy Fansler and Dale Vaughan.
Honorary pallbearers will be Randy and Debbie Helsley and Ralph and Violet Lonas.
The family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Orkney Springs.
