Franklin K. Funkhouser (1936 - 2017)

Franklin K. Funkhouser, 80, of Woodstock, passed away Friday, January 13, 2017 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.
He was born October 12, 1936 at Basye, Shenandoah County, Virginia. He was the son of the late Nevin C. Funkhouser and Gladys E. Moomaw Funkhouser.
He was a graduate of Triplett High School, Mt. Jackson, VA, the class of 1954. In 1960 he graduated from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington DC.
He also served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.
Frank joined Haun-Magruder, Inc., an Independent Insurance Agency in Woodstock, VA in 1963. He was promoted to President in 1966 and purchased the business in 1984. He retired on January 2, 2013, after 50 years of service. He served as Chairman of the Board until his passing.
He was active in the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia, served on its Board of Directors, and various committee assignments over the years. He also served on Agents Advisory Boards, including Chairman, for a number of companies represented by Haun-Magruder, Inc.
He was a member of a number of civic clubs over the years. He served as President of the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Shenandoah County and also served as Crusade Chairman for the Shenandoah County Cancer Society. He was a past President of the West Shenandoah Ruritan Club.
He was elected to the Board of Directors of First Virginia Bank, Blue Ridge Bank in 1972 where he served until their merger with BB&T in 2003. He was then appointed Chairman of the local Advisory Board of BB&T where he served until 2006.
For six years, he also served on the Board of Directors of Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp and Retreat Center. He was Treasurer, and one of his passions was raising funds for that organization.
He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Mt. Jackson for 57 years. Over the years, he served many terms on the Church Council. Offices held in the church included President of the Council, Sunday School Superintendent, Call Committee Chairman, Chairman of Long Range Planning, Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Finance Committee and Financial Secretary.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold W. Funkhouser, William B. Funkhouser, James D. Funkhouser, Robert E. Funkhouser, Sr., and his only sister, Phyllis L. Dellinger.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia Funk Funkhouser and three children, Amanda Sue Rushe and her husband, Randall R. Rushe, of Chapin, SC., Lynne Marie Funkhouser of Woodstock, VA, and Michael Franklin Funkhouser and his wife, Elizabeth S. Funkhouser, of Woodstock, VA. Six grandchildren, Laura E. Rushe, Alexander R. Rushe, Jennifer M. Hoye, David J. Hoye, Andrew M. Funkhouser and Brent F. Funkhouser.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Mt. Jackson with the Reverend Matthew Diehl officiating.
The family will be receiving friends at the church following the service.
