Wilmer E. Moomaw
Wilmer Elwood Moomaw, 86, died at his home in Orkney Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004. He was born on May 13, 1917, in Orkney Springs, the son of the late Charles Thomas and Minnie Florence Funkhouser Moomaw. He was married to Nellie Mae Stickley Moomaw on Nov. 14, 1935.
Mr. Moomaw graduated from Triplett High School in Mount Jackson in 1935. He became the director of
Shrine Mont in 1950, succeeding Shrine Mont's founder, Dr. Edmund Lee Woodward. Mr. Moomaw served as Shrine Mont's director until his retirement in 1988. Prior to that, he had worked in several capacities at Shrine Mont for over 25 years for a total service to the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia of 65 years. During his years as director of Shrine Mont, Mr. Moomaw oversaw the purchase and renovation of the Orkney Springs Hotel property.
Mr. Moomaw was appointed postmaster of Orkney Springs in 1939, a position he held until his retirement in 1965. He operated the general store in Orkney Springs from 1948 to 1965. He was a charter member and first president of both the Orkney Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the West Shenandoah Ruritan Club. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration.
He is survived by his wife; four children, Donald Richard Moomaw and his wife, Thelma, of Orkney
Springs, Wilmer Edmund Moomaw and his wife, Suzanne, of Charlottesville, John Thomas Moomaw and his wife, Judi, of Orkney Springs and Carolyn Moomaw Chilton and her husband, John, of Orkney Springs; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Moomaw Gregory, Karen Moomaw Rose, Kevin Donald Moomaw, John Thomas Moomaw Jr., Elizabeth Moomaw Peyton, Ann Marie Moomaw, Amy Moomaw Goodnight, Virginia Stickley Chilton and Wilmer Edmund Moomaw and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived
by his brother, Robert Randolph Moomaw of Bloomville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by another brother, Leo Vincent Moomaw.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at the Cathedral Shrine of the
Transfiguration in Orkney Springs with the Right Rev. Peter James Lee, Bishop of Virginia, presiding. The family will receive friends at home in the afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. and following the service.
