Narrow Escape - Mr. Daniel C. Miller and Others Stunned by Lightning
During the storm on Tuesday afternoon Mr. DANIEL C. MILLER, near Middletown, and his son RALPH, had a narrow escape from a lightning bolt. They were plowing corn, and when the storm broke started down the furrow for a large locust tree. When within 30 yards of the tree, a flash of lightning struck it, splitting the tree from top to bottom. Mr. MILLER says the crash hurt his head, but only slightly stunned him.
Walnut, apple and peach trees were blown down near Shafer's (?) saw mill. Corn fields were badly washed and considerable corn blown over.
During the storm, lightning struck a tree in NATHANIEL MUMMA's field, between Boonsboro and Fairplay, and rendered unconscious his two sons, EDWARD and HUBERT, and GEO. DUTROW, of near Middletown, who is working for Mr. MUMMA. The three were plowing corn and took refuge under a tree. They were standing by the side of one of the horses when the lightning hit the tree. The horses and all three men went down on the ground in a heap. A side flash struck HUBERT on the right arm, passing across his body and down his left leg to the ground, burning a blister on his foot. EDWARD MUMMA and DUTROW regained consciousness shortly afterward and they carried HUBERT, who was still in an unconscious condition, to the house.
