Dr. Michael Mumma
May 27, 1957 - July 8, 2021
Mike, a devoted husband, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully on July 8th in Sarasota, FL after a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 64 and a long-term resident of Siesta Key.
Mike was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and spent his youth in Orefield, PA. He attended Duke University and then Duke Medical School. He did his cardiology internship, residency and fellowship at Wake Forest's Baptist Medical Center. In 1989 he began his 33-year career practicing interventional cardiology in Sarasota, Florida. In addition to seeing patients in a busy private practice, Florida Cardiac Consultants, Dr. Mumma served as principal investigator in many new treatment trials through the Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) Clinical Research Center.
This year, Dr. Mumma received the lifetime achievement award from SMH for his lasting contributions to the practice of medicine and significant impact to patient care at SMH and in the community.
Mike always enjoyed time spent with family, traveling and a variety of hobbies, including fishing, flying, golf and woodworking. He was a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed boat captain, an instrument-rated pilot, 5-time member guest champion, accomplished musician, and avid fan of Duke University.
He is survived by his wife Martha Mumma, brother Mitch Mumma and wife Chris and their children Samantha, Kyle and Madison, stepchildren Summer and Gabe Waterman and nephew Carl Geist.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mike's name to Pilots N Paws (
