PORT BYRON, Ill., Virgil H. Mumma, 72, of Port Byron, died Monday, July 27, 2009, at home. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Catholic Church, Rapids City, Ill. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Rapids City. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Memorials may be made to Trinity Hospice or St. John's Catholic Church.
Virgil Hugh Mumma was born July 9, 1937, in Moline, the son of Virgil and Cyretha Welch Mumma. He married Lucille Skelton on June 20, 1959, at St. John's Catholic Church, Rapids City. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was employed at John Deere for over 40 years. He was a Christmas tree farmer throughout his life and owned and operated Hidden Pines Christmas Tree Farm. Virgil was a member of St. John's Catholic Church where he was involved in the Parish Council, Finance Committee, was a
Eucharistic and Hospitality Minister and was instrumental in building the Parish Hall. Virgil was a Riverdale School Board member for many years and was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and Cursillo.
Virgil enjoyed his canoe club, bridge club and over 36 years of canoeing/fishing trips to Quetico National park in Canada with various family and friends. He enjoyed following the Riverdale High School wrestling program.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; children and spouses, Julie (Jim) Perkins, Woodbury, Minn., Jeff (Tammy) Mumma, Aimee Vermeulen and Ben Domingez, Kathy (Kurt) Young, all of Port Byron and Jon (Carrie) Mumma of Maryville, Ill. His grandchildren, Joe and Nicki Mumma, D.J., BreeAnn and Josh Stokes, Drew (Christen) Vermeulen, Melissa Claus, Sarah and Bailey Young, Cassidy and Caitlin Mumma, a great-grandchild, Avah Mumma; his stepmother, Margaret Fender; and brothers, Jim (Joan) Mumma, Port Byron and Bill (Cynthia) Fender, East Moline.
