NASHUA -- Jim Buell Mumma Sr., 85, of The Huntington, formerly of Tilton and Sanbornton, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at home of a heart attack.
He enjoyed phenomenal health and the full use of his faculties throughout his life and was independent and active until his death.
He was born in Bronxville, N.Y., on Sept. 16, 1920, to Harries Arthur Mumma and Winifred Ruth Buell.
He was a graduate of the Taft School and Yale University, where he received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1944.
He married Nancy Lee Beatty of Pittsburgh, and the couple lived for many years in Framingham, Mass., Summit, N.J., and Wellesley, Mass., before moving to New Hampshire in 1977. They often summered at a cottage on Manitou Lake, Manitoulin Island.
During World War II, Jim participated in the successful development of non-flammable hydraulic fluids for military aircraft, which was credited with saving many airmen's lives. Most of his career was spent as a technical sales representative and manager at Union Carbide Corp.
He founded and managed Technomerics Corp., a Medway, Mass., manufacturer of industrial adhesives until his retirement. He enjoyed continuing success as a stock market and real estate investor.
Jim pursued many interests, including hiking, travel, tennis, science-based alternative medical therapies, astronomy and a deep study of the Bible. He loved nature and music and was an avid reader.
He deeply loved his wife, children and grandchildren. A lover of truth, honesty, integrity, respect for others and kindness, he lived the open life of one who lived these qualities and imputed them to others. He was never heard to utter a racial or ethnic slur in public or private.
Jim and Nancy Mumma were active in Christian service for decades with Jehovah's Witnesses. Jim was most recently a member of the Hollis Congregation, where he served as an elder, presenter, public reader and financial auditor. He was articulate in expressing his faith, drawing on his heartfelt care for people and deep Bible understanding in witnessing about Jesus Christ and Jesus's father, Jehovah. He also expressed his faith through hospitality and other ministries of compassion, which included those in prison.
A devoted father and grandfather, he leaves daughters, Nancy Salisbury of Atlanta and Constance Swartz of Los Angeles; and a son, James Jr. of Westford, Mass.
At the time of his death, he had four grandchildren, Alison Ramer of Los Angeles, Wesley Hamilton of Tulsa, Okla., and James III and Rosamond of Westford, Mass.
Calling hours will be held Fridayfrom 6 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 1 Lock St., Nashua.
Memorial services will follow at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 282 Broad St., Hollis.
