I confirm that Georgia Anna McElhatten and Nancy (Lee) Beatty Mumma were one and the same person. My mother, whom I always knew as Nancy Mumma, was officially adopted by Lee C. Beatty and Gertrude L. Beatty, his wife, on August 1, 1942. She legally assumed the surname of Nancy Lee Beatty at that time, though she had been known by that name since she came to live with the Beattys in the Spring of 1923.
Per a document composed by her adoptive father, Lee C. Beatty, entitled "Statement of Facts" and dated July 21, 1942, Georgia Anna's natural father could not bring himself "to sign the necessary consent" to make the adoption legal. Adoption was, however, the de facto case until becoming official in 1942. The Certificate of Birth for Georgia Anna McElhatten indicates the time of her birth as July 10, 1919 at 1am.
