Fruit farmer B.W. Mumma dies at 79
Bernard W. Mumma, owner and president of Mumma Fruit Farms in Harrison Twp., died Wednesday at the Franklin Nursing Center in Vandalia following a lengthy illness. He was 79.
A Harrison Twp. native, Mr. Mumma was the son of Clyde Mumma, founder of the family fruit and vegetable farm that became one of the largest diversified farms in Ohio. His mother, Adele (Wampler) Mumma, also came. from a family of fruit farmers.
His son, Rick Mumma, said his father had dedicated his life to the business and was active in it up until he became ill several months ago.
"His life was the fruit farm," his son said.
Mr. Mumma and .his father. were instrumental in starting. "pick-your-own"' fruit. operations in the area And 'had one of the original commercial cider presses, his son said.
Mr. Mumma was a past president and life member "of the Ohio Fruit Growers Society and he was active in the Troy Figure Skating Club for a number of years.
In addition to his son, Rick, survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Debbie Wright of Columbus; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Baker-Hazel Funeral Home, 5555 Philadelphia Drive. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
