Richard L. Hivner, 88, formerly of Hummelstown passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the Masonic Village, Elizabethtown.
Dick was born January 13, 1927 and raised on the West Side of Steelton. He attended the Steelton Public Schools and graduated from Steelton High School in 1945. Dick graduated from Elizabethtown College, class of 1949 and Bucknell University with a master?s degree in 1960. He was a member of the former Main Street Church of God.
In 1952 he married Esther Marie Engle of Hummelstown, who survives.
Dick was predeceased by a sister Dorothea Earnest, a brother Donald Hivner and his parents Elsie (Swartley) Hivner and Maurice O.P. Hivner.
Dick was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hummelstown. He served formerly as Sunday School Superintendent, chairman of Christian Education, on the Staff/Parish relations committee, Financial Secretary, usher and as a member of the Sanctuary choir. He was a former member of the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church where he served on the conference Council of Youth Ministries and the Board of Christian Discipleship.
Dick retired from Susquehanna Township School District after thirty-three years of employment as a science teacher and guidance counselor. Because of his employment in Susquehanna Township Schools he was a member of the committee that founded the first Capitol Region Science Fair, attended the meeting that formulated HACC and was on the committee that formed the curriculum for the first Dauphin County Technical School.
He was associated with High School Athletics for fifty-three years as a coach, administrator and an athletic official. In 1949 he became a PIAA basketball official, followed later by PIAA football and culminated in 2003 as a track and field official. Dick coached at West Fairview Jr. High School and Susquehanna Township High School. He was a member of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter PIAA Football Officials, its Hall of Fame, International Association Approved Basketball Officials Chapter #70, Collegiate Basketball Officials Association and Central Pennsylvania PIAA Chapter of Track and Field officials. He was the secretary-treasurer of the former Capital Area Athletic Conference for twenty-three years. Dick was inducted into the Capital Area Chapter of Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
He was President of the former Harrisburg YMCA Co-ed Club, a driver for the Hummelstown Elder Express Van program and secretary for the Pennsylvania Association College Admissions Counselors. Dick was a life member of the Dauphin County Chapter Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Past President and Chairman of the Pre-retirement committee.
He was a member of the Steelton-Swatara Lodge #775 F. & A.M., Valley of Harrisburg Consistory, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite and Zembo Shriners where he was a member of the Ushers Unit and the Luncheon Club.
