Biographical Sketch of Douglas M. Mumma
--------------------------------------------------
Doug was born in Riverside, California where he was raised and attended the local schools. Upon graduation from high school, he continued his education at the University of California at Riverside where he was one of the original 128 "charter students" when UCR opened in January of 1954. He was a Physics major and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in June of 1957.
After graduation from UCR, Doug joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a research physicist for 6 1/2 years. There he was assigned to the nuclear weapons design group and participated in the development of new diagnostic techniques and equipment to evaluate design effectiveness. He participated in a number of nuclear weapon tests on Eniwetok Atoll, Christmas Island and at the Nevada Test Site.
In 1964, he joined Physics International Company as a physicist when the company was only 2 years old. Initially he was involved with the early development of pulsed power equipment and was responsible for designing and developing the companies' first commercial 1 MeV pulsed X-ray machine. For the next 16 years, Doug was extensively involved in Physics International's high explosives research and ordnance development. He helped develop the companies' 450 acre explosives Test Site while serving as the principal investigator for numerous programs including hypervelocity accelerators, oil and gas well explosive stimulators, shaped charges, and the detonation of large quantities of methane gas. His last major project was the program management of a successful program to demonstrate the emplacement and detonation of 11,000 pounds of high explosives in a 5000 foot deep, 500 degree Fahrenheit, steam well. Doug holds a joint patent for an oil well stimulation technique and has co-author numerous papers involving pulsed power and explosives applications.
Doug served as the manager of the Explosives Applications Department where a highly successful exploding bridgewire detonator business was developed jointly with an outside company. He later managed the Piezoelectric Department and was promoted to Director of the Mechanical Design and Fabrication Division in 1981. These responsibilities were later expanded to include the Plant Facilities, Safety, and Information Services Departments. His organization was then renamed the Operations Support Division and in 1986 he was appointed Vice President of Physics International.
In February of 1992 Doug retired from gainful employment and became involved in genealogy and the research of his ancestors. He has since continued his interest in science and has become a pioneer in the use of DNA testing for genealogical research. His MUMMA Surname Project was the first privately funded project initiated in April 2000 which now has over 90 participants. He is also a researcher on the GATTER surname and NANKIVELL surname projects which examine the genetic ancestry of his wife's ancestors.
