James R. Mummau
James R. Mummau, 71, of Elizabethtown, passed away Thursday, November 10, 2005 at Lancaster General Hospital. Death was due to complications following back surgery.
Born October 14, 1934 on his family's farm in Mount Joy Twp., he was the son of the late Levi R. and Almeda Risser Mummau. He was the devoted husband of Millie Schaeffer Mummau for 45 years on July 3rd.
During his youth, he attended Elizabethtown High School and drove cattle trucks to surrounding states. He served in the US Army from 1957 to 1959.
Jim was well known for his former restaurant the Lancaster Co. Farm Diner in Elizabethtown, which he owned and operated from 1960 to 1985. He and his wife operated the first "Smorgasbord" style restaurant, serving chicken potpie, stuffing and fried chicken. The business later also evolved into a large catering service, serving all of Lancaster County.
From 1976 to 1984, Jim served as Supervisor for Mount Joy Twp., which included the duties of "Roadmaster" and also overseeing operations of the Police Department.
Jim and Millie operated Mummau's Bed & Bath on Market St. in Elizabethtown during his latter years. The diner's trademark, a large 9-foot fiberglass rooster named Rex, made Jim a local celebrity and was a front lawn fixture.
He was an active member of the Elizabethtown Christian & Missionary Alliance Church where he served as an usher, was a member of the Young at Heart group, and used his cooking talents for church events. Jim enjoyed gardening, helping those in need, and golfing. His woodworking skill captured blue ribbons for his talent at local fairs. He enjoyed Southern Gospel music.
Papaw's greatest joy was squeezing and kissing his grandchildren. He had a unique sense of humor, and a chuckle that God seemed to have created just for him. Jim will be most remembered as a loving husband and father and doting grandfather.
Jim left his mark by living his life as a follower of Jesus Christ. He remained faithful despite all the trials and tribulations encountered while sojourning to heaven.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Wanda Bomgardner of Elizabethtown, Cindy (Rusty) Boyd of Middletown, Teresa (Frederick) White, of Grove City, Jimmy J. (Laura Flowers) of Marietta and Jesse (Autumn Kennedy) of Bainbridge. He was a loving "Papaw" to Lucinda, Anastasia, Elias, Hasia, Zach, Ryan, Betsy, Aleks, Adriela, Gracie, Wyatt, Kylie and Molly. Also surviving Jim is a sister, Rachel (Arthur) Kauffman of Elizabethtown. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Levi Jr. and J. Robert and a grandson, Jod White.
A funeral service honoring Jim's life will be held at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 425 Cloverleaf Rd., Elizabethtown, PA on Monday, November 14, 2005 at 11 AM with the Reverend Kenton Kreider and Jim's cousin, Pastor Ernie Mummau officiating. Interment to follow in the Elizabethtown Mennonite Cemetery. Friends may call at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church on Sunday afternoon, November 13th from 2 to 4 PM and again on Monday morning November 14th from 10 AM until the time of the service.
