Suzanne V. Martin died Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Meritus Hospital in Hagerstown, Md., after a long illness. Born March 29, 1946 she was the daughter of the late Charles and Florence Potts. She also was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. She is survived by two brothers and a sister; special neighbors and friends: Doug, Lonnie, Brandon and Katie Butrick; her husband of 43 years, Richard Martin; brother-in-law, Jeff Martin, and other nieces and nephews.
Suzanne graduated from Williamsport High School. She attended Hagerstown Junior College and graduated from Towson State University with a bachelor?s degree in elementary education. She earned a master?s degree in psychology from Hood College. She worked as a sixth grade Language Arts teacher at Northern and Western Heights Middle Schools in the Washington County Public Schools for 32 years. She was instrumental in the development of Project Promise to promote programs for gifted children.
Suzanne loved teaching and all the children she worked with over the years. In retirement, she devoted her time to reading, writing and her pets. She loved flowers and bird watching.
We want to thank the staff in the emergency room and intensive care unit at Emeritus Hospital, especially Dr. Turley and Nurse Heidi in ICU. We also want to thank Nurse/EMT Sandy for being there whenever we needed her. Thanks also to the Mount Aetna Volunteer Fire Department, the Smithsburg Ambulance Squad and the staff from Lutheran Home Health Care Services. We want to also thank Tom and Linda VanMetre and the congregation at Christ Reformed Church for the prayer shawl.
There will be no viewing. A visitation will be held at the J.L. Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg, MD 21783 from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday May 9, 2014.
