From an obituary in an area newspaper:
About ten o'clock Sunday morning Jerome Showalter of Onekama, was drowned in Gordon Lake, a small lake two miles from the village. He was bathing and picking pond lilies with some small boys and when he stepped off into a deep hole they were unable to rescue him, and before assistance arrived he drowned. Deceased was 29 years of age. J. P. Maise, the Bear Lake undertaker had charge of the funeral which occured Tuesday at 2 p. m.
