Sam couldn't speak English when he went to school. His father Jacob C. Kissinger had a German Testament. In 1885 lived at J. C. Kissingers farm. Emma and Ethel born there. Moved by the time Mabel started school in 1891. Ran a grocery on Harrison Avenue in Osborn, OH. Marguerite and Anna born in Osborn. When Mabel was 12, moved to farm (1898). Lester born there. Sam was a carpenter, built houses in Osborn between 1903 and 1905 when they lived on Johnson Street. Bertha Kissinger lived next door. Sam and Lizzie socialized with distant relatives the Esterlines, playing Euchre and Pinochle. Sam worked at Barney and Smith Car Co. doing carpentry on railroad cars between 1905 and 1915. After 1915, work became slack so Sam and a few other men went to Pittsburgh where they knew of jobs. Sam remarried in Pennsylvania. He had known Carrie when young, before he married Lizzie Rettew. Lived there until 1946, then moved back to Dayton and lived with Marguerite. Sam never owned an automobile.
I have check the marriage records of Clark County and Montgomery Co, OH, and find no record for the marriage to Elizabeth Rettew. A genealogical biography indicated that Elizabeth married Sam of "Stark County Ohio" which I believe to be a typo for Clark. But I requested a search of the Stark Co. records during the relevant period and they had no finding. The biography indicated his last name as Kiddinger, which tends to support the typo theory. It is possible he married her in Pennsylvania, which I have not yet checked.
