On Jan 23 1869 Martin received quarterly conference license from Highspire to preach the Gospel. Ordained as an Elder on March 1870. Served in a number of offices in the church and on March 10, 1872 he was elected presiding Elder.
He was the first United Brethren minister to hold services in Ephrata in 1872. He served a second time from 1900 to 1903.

He was a post-war member of Post No. 58, G.A.R.
