Joseph "Joe" Moomaw, a retired attorney, of Mechanicsburg, formerly of Lake Meade, Waynesboro and Camp Hill, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at home. He passed away of natural causes. Mr. Moomaw was born in Waynesboro, PA on June 14, 1933, he was the son of the late Paul C. and Lucille (Fowler) Moomaw. He was a graduate of Waynesboro High School, Class of 1951, The Wharton School of Finance and Commerce of the University of Pennsylvania and The Dickinson School of Law. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol Ann (Myers) Moomaw; daughters Karin M. McHale and her husband Michael, Leigh A. McBride and her husband Patrick, all of Mechanicsburg, Dawn L. Svirsko and her husband Alex of Johnstown; sons, Geoffrey D. and his wife Donna of Camp Hill, Paul A and his wife Susan of Virginia Beach, VA and Scott J. and his wife Carolyn of Springfield, IL. Also surviving are his 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister Laura Jane Ulmer, Glen Mills, PA and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Paul B. and an infant grandson, Benjamin J. Moomaw. Early in his career he was an assistant attorney general for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and was General Counsel of the Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner. The remainder of his professional career was spent in private practice and as General Counsel for Interstate Tax Service of Mechanicsburg, consultants, and specialists in unemployment compensation matters. He was recognized state-wide as an expert in unemployment compensation law and authored several amendments to that law. He served for more than thirty years on the unemployment compensation committee of Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and for more than ten years on the State Unemployment Compensation Advisory Council until his retirement at the end of 1996. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mechanicsburg, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and formerly Lodge #731 of the B.P.O. Elks, Waynesboro. He served with the US Army in 1958 and 1959 and with the Pennsylvania National Guard until 1964. Mr. Moomaw was an avid reader, particularly of World War II History, and was also an avid sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox since the 1940's. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 10, 2022, at First United Methodist Church, Mechanicsburg. There will be a visitation held from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Joe was under the tender loving care of Amanda and Helen from Homeland Hospice. The family thanks them for the great care that they provided to Joe.
