John T. Mumma, Jr., 91, of Pheasant Hill Estates, Harrisburg, died peacefully at home on September 5, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
John was the son of the late John T., Sr. and the late Leah (Wallace) Mumma. He was preceded in death by his lifetime companion, Jane Caldwell of Harrisburg, and by granddaughter, Aimee (Caldwell) Yarnell.
John was a World War II US Navy Veteran, serving from 1942 to 1945 in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Following his military service, he was a master plumber, and worked for Dissinger Plumbing, Olmsted Air Force Base and the New Cumberland Army Depot, from which he retired.
For more than 50 years, John maintained a cabin in Perry County, which was his pride and joy. The cabin was the site of many parties, family gatherings and other joyous occasions. At his largest party in 1972, by his count, John hosted 96 people and eight dogs.
John is survived by son, Richard Caldwell of Duncannon; stepsons, William Caldwell and wife Linda of Harlem, GA, George Caldwell and wife Judy of Harrisburg; and one stepdaughter, Sue and husband Terry Smith of Harrisburg; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A sister, Fay Fackler of Mechanicsburg, also survives, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
