Born in Omaha, NE, her father was Robert Jackson Mumma, aka RJ. Her mother, Grace Hettinger Mumma. Pearl was originally named, Snooky Mumma. But in the 5th grade, her teacher asked if she'd like to change her name. Being about 10 years old, why not? By this time, her mother had divorced Robert, remarried Francis W Haines. The teacher asked Snooky the month in which she was born. June was the month and her birthstone was a pearl. Snooky didn't like the name, June, so she selected, Pearl.
The teacher renamed her, Pearl Haines. No documents or legal changes. When going to visit her side of the family, she was called, Snook or Snooky. When going to Dads side of the family, she was called, Pearl.
She was hospitalized at a young age, and was impressed by the white uniforms, so her ambition in life was to become a nurse. She did that in the early 1950's, worked until retirement the night shifts.
In 1964, she lost her oldest daughter, Sally, and her father, Robert J Mumma.
They later retired, bought 10 acres, built a new home and lived there until they died.
