According to the 1880 census she was born about 1865 in Illinois. Her death record (Ancestry.com California Deaths 1940-97, Scott, Bertha Annette, mother maiden name Humphrey, father Mumaugh) gives her birth date as 7 June 1877. It seems that the census is likely to be more accurate. This death record is not proven to be this same woman, but the surnames of the two parents makes it very likely that we have correctly matched Bertha in California to Bertha in Illinois, especially since we have found individuals likely to be Minnie and Rose to also be in California.
[Note by Doug Mumma.] A review of the 1900 census reveals a birth date for Bertha of June, 1863 which is consistent with her age in the 1880 census of 15 and 1870 census of 7 census. The California death index is completely in error.
