Phyllis Van Vliet Mumaw
Phyllis V. Mumaw, 75, formerly of Holton, died June 24, 2005, at an Englewood, Colo. hospital. She was born July 2, 1929, in Holton, the daughter of John W. and Maude B. Powell Van Vliet. She graduated from Holton High School in 1947, and from Kansas State University with a degree in home economics in 1951. Mrs. Mumaw was a substitute school teacher for 22 years. She taught children in kindergarten through high school in the Holton, Royal Valley and Effingham school districts. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Four Seasons Garden Club, all of Holton. She was also a member of the Jackson County Farm Bureau, a Jackson County Extension Unit, and a life member of the Jackson County Historical Society. She married Dean T. Mumaw on Aug. 28, 1949, in Holton. He died July 31, 2002. She also was preceded in death by a son, J. Kent Mumaw, who died in 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Lynne Marie Mumaw Black, Eugene, Ore., and Rebecca Miller, Conifer, Colo.; and two grandchildren. Memorial services were held June 27 at First United Methodist Church in Holton. Inurnment was in Holton Cemetery.
