"Cyrenus Chapin Sayles died at his home in Vergennes Sunday morning, Sept 24h, aged 81 yrs., 3 mo., 4 days. The funeral was from the Congregational church in this village Tuesday. Rev. J. T. Hasted officiated and was largely, attended by his old neighbors from Keene.
Cyrenus Chapin Sayles was born in Lewiston Co., NY June 20, 1812, and died in Vergennes Mich, Septh 24th 1893. He was married to Eliza Gardner in East Dumfries, Can., Mar 1835 and with his wife and four small children moved to Michigan and settled on the old homestead, in Keene, in 1844-where they raised the family-and which he owned until Mar 1893. Fifteen children were born to them; ten sons: Edwin, William, Cyrenus, Lyman, Merrit, Sanford, Montraville, Leroy, Perry and Franks, and five daughters: Mrs. Lena Sneathen, of Washington, Mrs. Geo P. Taylor, of Lowell, Mrs. Geo. Forrest of Fennville, Mrs. Chas. McCarty, of Lowell, and Mrs. Cliffton White of Boston. His wife and 15 children survive him, his being the first death in the family. There are living fifteen children, forty-one grandchildrend. He was a man universally respected and liked, while having strong opinions his humorous expressions of them gave no one offence. He gave his children a good bringing up, three of them being physicians, each with a lucrative practice. His older brother Elias Sayles, survives him.
