Katherine "Kay" Miller, age 86, of Wyoming, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014, after a short battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents: Robert and Ethel Carter. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 64 years, Richard; children: Stephen Miller and Margarita Ortiz-Miller of Houston, TX; Christine and Byron Mumaw of Greenville, NC; grandchildren: Jennifer and Sean Griess, Heather Mumaw, Bethany Mumaw; and her brother and his wife, Norman "Bud" and Juanita Carter of Middleton, MI. Katherine was born on a farm near Crystal, MI. She earned a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and got married in 1949 to her college sweetheart. Later, she earned a Masters Degree from Western Michigan, and taught home economics for 20 years at Kentwood High School beginning in 1965. Kay enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling, and cheering for the Detroit Tigers, and MSU Spartan athletics. A celebration of Kay's life will be held Friday, March 21 at 2 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 47 Jefferson Ave. SE Grand Rapids with Rev. Nancy Clodfelder officiating. Relatives and friends may visit the family on Thursday from 6-8 PM at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park Ave., Wyoming. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at Crystal Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the cancer foundation of your choice.
