JAMES CURTIS MOOMAW
James Curtis Moomaw was the son of Leroy and Louise Marbut Moomaw, born January 26, 1928 in Dickinson, North Dakota, where his father was an agronomist at the Experiment Station of the University of North Dakota. He followed in his father's footsteps as an agronomist, and spent almost his entire career on the international scene employed by the Rockefeller Foundation as a member of the International Rice Research Institute. He first went to Honolulu, Hawaii, where his first son John Fletcher Moomaw was born, and later to Manila, the Philippine Islands where the latter three sons were born. The Rockefeller Foundation honored his life at a memorial service in New York on July 29, 1983.
Several members of the Rockefeller Foundation and other organization with whom Jim worked spoke glowingly of his life and accomplishments. Some of the eulogies were titled: "His Life Made a Difference" "He Made a Lasting Mark of Goodness", "Goodbye Old Friend", "The Eleventh Hour Man. His wife, Carolyn, said: "He filled my life with love, high adventure, and sons. Together we led our small band around the world sharing the numerous joys and crises of family life. His wit, sensitivity, charm, and intelligence gave our marriage a freshness in today's often jaded world." Each of his four sons spoke lovingly of their father.
His assignments had taken him to Hawaii, the Philippines, Ceylon, Colombia, Nigeria, and Taiwan. He directed the Asian Vegtable Research & Development Center (AVRDC) in Taiwan for four years and was decorated with the Order of the Brilliant Star for his agricultural accomplishments there. He returned to the United States in 1979, and died in 1983 after a long illness caused by a brain tumor.
