Notes:
There has been much confusion surrounding the identity between John Mumma & Jonathan Mumma. They both are about the same age, were born in Washington County, MD and migrated to Ogle County in the late 1830's.
John Mumma was the son of Joseph Mumma. The relationship of John Mumma to Joseph Mumma was recorded in a baby book written and dated on 29 December, 1907 in Forreston, IL by Susan E. Mumma about her sister, Marjory Eva Mumma who was born on 19 January, 1904. She recorded their grandparents names as John and Susan Mumma and their great grandfather as Joseph Mumma. No great grandmother was recorded. This book is in the possession of Susan Swift who resides in Forreston, Illinois (2014). Susan's great grandparents were John and Susan Mumma. The existance ot this book was brought to my attention by William Dale Sims, the 4th great grandfather of Joseph Mumma.
John Mumma is incorrectly listed in Robert Moomaw's book as Johathan Shafer Mumma

Forreston, IL Herald from December 10, 1878
-----------------------------
Mr. and Mrs. John Mumma have gone east to Washington County, Md., to visit their old home and olden time friends. Thirty-two years ago, in the prime of life they left their native State and started westward to find a home in the then wild west. They settled in this county and since 1846 have never been back to the home of their childhood until now. What changes they will find! Of their youthful friends many have gone the way of all earth, while others, too, left their homes to enter into life battles else where. Those who gave them the parting grasp of the hand and a strong arm will greet them now, but the relentless hand of time will have made many changes. We all wish them a happy visit.
