"J" Richard Murr. 81 of Cardiff Court, Lititz, died Tuesday at Essa Flory Hospice Center after a short illness. Murr was executive director of Vocational Administration of Pennsylvania from 1984 until his retirement in 1987. He began his career as an industrial arts teacher in Annville-Cleona School District in 1946. He was a teacher and guidance counselor at Warwick School District from 1956 to 1967 and an administrator at Lancaster County Vocational-Technical Schools from 1967 to 1984. After serving as a baseball coach at Warwick, Murr was named to the newly created post of director of athletics at the school in 1963. He earned a bachelor's degree in industrial education in 1943 from the former Millersville State Teachers College, a master's degree in industrial education in 1949 from Penn State University and a master's degree in guidance in 1965 from Shippensburg University. He was honored by the Pennsylvania State Advisory Council on Vocational Education in 1979. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served from 1943 to 1946. He participated in the Normandy invasion on D-Day and in Pacfic operations. Murr was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Lititz, where he served as a Sunday School superintendent and teacher, usher and choir member. He also played in the Moravian Trombone Choir. He was a member of American Business Club of Lititz and was a former officer and volunteer with Lititz Meals on Wheels. Born in Brownstown, He was the son of the late Howard Bushong and Ellen Elizabeth Mumma Murr. He was married 58 years on Feb. 27 to Ethel Alberta Schlemm Murr. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Thomas Richard, married to Brenda Ann Seibert Murr of Anderson, Ind.,and David Craig, married to Martina Lynn Stoner Murr of Pfafftown, NC; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bethany Jean Murr.
