"Marilis is a German contraction of Maria Elisabeth; this Marilis was named for her mother and her maternal grandmother, both also Marilis. Most often in the census, her given name was recorded as Elizabeth.
Sometimes her maiden name is spelled Kampfer. In Lancaster County, PA even today you will hear the pronunciation KAMPFER. I (Vic) have talked to several persons there who speak PA Dutch; when I introduced myself to them they would say "Ah, yes, Kampfer." This spelling is from the way "the English" record-keepers heard it pronounced by "Dutch" speakers, but it is not the way the Germans surnamed KEMPER spell it. Of course, "the English" officialdom bastardized the spellling of many other German names as well."
