George Wesley Mumma served in the civil war. The pension file of George W. Mumma shows that he served in Company C, 51st Reg't Ind Inf Vol. His post office at enlistment was Decater, Indiana. The original roll indicates he was in Indianapolis. He was discharged in Louisville, Kentucky July 10, 1865. This unit was commanded by Capt Hamilton. The records note that he was 5' 91/2", had dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, and his occupation was a farmer. After serving in the war he lived in the following locations Adams Co., Noble Co. 2 years, Adams Co. March 25, 1869, Allen Co., Kimmell Co of Noble Ind in 1921, all in Indiana. George marks his documents with an X rather than a signature.
The pension issued on July 11 1865 was for $2; by 1912 it was $15.50 and by 1923 he was receiving $72. In March 1929 there is a doctor's letter stating that George is living with Chester Wurtsbaugh. At his time there is a request for an increase of pension to $90 due to his condition, rheumatism. He died the next month.
The records are clear that he was married twice. His first marriage was to Harriet Elizabeth Clayton. They were married April 9, 1868; she died July 7, 1908 at Kimmell, Noble Co., Ind. His second marriage was to Elmira Nobles Nulf on 28 Aug 1909 by Henry J. Grabner, J.P. in Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Ind. Elmira was previously married to Phillip Nulf Oct 15, 1869; he died Dec 16 1893. Elmira died April 1928.
The records mention that George had one child, Lilly Alletha Mumma b Feb 20, 1872.
There is an original letter in this file written on April 23, 1913 to the Pension Dept from his sister, Elizabeth J. Warner. The letter indicates that she is 62. And living in Sparta twp, Noble Co., Ind in possession of a family bible written by her father. (Father's name not mentioned.) She writes in this letter that the bible contains the names of his 12 children, births ranging from 1845 to 1866, deaths of 6 children ranging from 1861 to 1909, and George's parent's deaths in 1893 and 1899. She specifically states that George was born on July 19, 1846 in Dover twp, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. There is also an interesting tidbit of information found in the file; that he had a boyhood friend by the name of William Harden.

Her birth and death dates are liste on her tombstone as b. 22 Dec 1845, died 7 July 1908.
