Charles H. Douglass
Spring Grove
Charles H. Douglass, 89, peacefully died and went joyfully to Heaven, to be with Jesus, on Tuesday night, February 27, 2018 at the York Hospital in York. Charles, also known as Dad, Doug, Charlie, Chad, Grandpa, and Pap, was called "Uncle Charlie" by almost everyone. Although Charlie had gone through several serious bouts with illness in his later years, he loved and trusted God to help him. He always smiled and encouraged each person he met. Charlie enjoyed sharing his faith in Jesus with people, as he gave each of them a little Bible.
Charles was born on Oct. 4, 1928, son of Rev. Nelson & Isabella Douglass in Elizabeth, (near Pittsburgh). Charlie or "Chad" had eight brothers (all now deceased); and four sisters (two are deceased). Margaret Robbie and Sylvia Motter are his surviving sisters. He loved his family.
Charles was a combat Korean War Veteran, serving as a firefighter in the U.S. Air Force. He was very patriotic!
On March 4, 1952, Charles or "Doug" married the love of his life, Grace I. Mumma of York. They truly loved their family and enjoyed home, church, and sporting events together. They were wonderful, loving, kind, supportive Christian parents! They were married for 53 happy years until Grace's death in Oct., 2005.
Charles was a tool and die maker, a machinist model maker, a sheet metal specialist, an experimental engineer and a corporate manager. He worked at Bendix and at AMP, Inc.
Charles was a wonderful man of faith, daily and actively living for Christ, faithfully serving the Lord at York Bible Church and at his former church, The Church of the Open Door, where he taught adult Sunday School classes and served on the church board. He preached at the York Rescue Mission for many years. He sang on the church choir and taught people how to share Christ's love with others.
Charlie's greatest joy came whenever he shared verses from the Bible and talked to a person about how to get to Heaven through Jesus Christ. He truly cared about the soul of each person he met!
Charles is survived by his three children, daughter, Brenda L. Motter and her husband, Bryan, of Spring Grove, daughter, Diane M. Harbaugh and her husband, Don, of Spring Grove; son, Chad J. Douglass and his wife, Tina, of Brogue. Another son, Charles H. Douglass, II, died as an infant in 1961.
Charles is survived by five grandchildren, DJ Harbaugh, Casey Harbaugh, Tim Harbaugh, Paige Douglass, and Logan Whitfield and their families, with six great-grandchildren. He has many wonderful nieces and nephews and a helpful brother-in-law, Frank Mumma.
A time of visitation with Charlie's family will be held at Beck Funeral Home and & Cremation Service Inc., 175 N. Main Street, Spring Grove, on Monday night, March 5, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service in celebration of Charlie's life will be held on Wednesday, March 7 at 11 a.m. at York Bible Church, 890 Taxville Road, York, with Rev. Dave Sutter officiating and Charlie's friend, Pastor Don Wagner assisting. (Before the service, there will be a time for family visitation from 10-11 a.m.) Immediately after the church service, there will be a burial service at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, with military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
